On April 4, 2024, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, former Speaker of the South African Parliament, faced charges of corruption and money laundering. She was charged with 12 counts of corruption and one count of money laundering.
Accusations against Mapisa-Nqakula include soliciting over 4.5 million rand (US$ 0.24 million) in bribes from a military contractor during her tenure as defense minister. A state witness claimed to have paid her 2.1 million rand in bribes.
Following a failed attempt in court to prevent potential arrest, she resigned as speaker and lawmaker.
