On January 29, 2024, former German Parliamentarian and CDU member Axel Eduard Fischer was charged with accepting bribes in exchange for providing public support and voting in favor of Azerbaijani interests. Allegations include altering reports on human rights, notably from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

Fischer is accused of accepting bribes totaling 21,800 euros in 2016 (USD 23,590) and 4,500 euros in 2015.

He is believed to have voted in favor of Azerbaijan, such as in a vote on the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Karabakh in January 2016. Notably, Fischer was serving as PACE’s parliamentary rapporteur for Armenia at the time.
