On February 1, 2024, Rached Ghannouchi (82), the president of the Ennahda Political Party, was sentenced to three years in prison for alleged receipt of foreign contributions. His son-in-law, Rafik Abdessalem, a former foreign minister, was also sentenced to three years.

The charges stem from allegations that the party relied on foreign financing to fund its political campaigns in 2019. Additionally, the court ordered Ghannouchi to pay a $1.17 million fine on behalf of his party.

Ennahda emerged as one of Tunisia’s largest parties following the 2011 uprising. However, in 2023, the Tunisian government closed down Ennahda’s headquarters in Tunis.
