On September 15, 2023, Lefter Koka, the former Albanian Environment Minister, along with seven other officials and four businessmen, was sentenced to prison terms by the Special Court on Corruption and Organized Crime in connection with charges of bribery, money laundering, and fraud.

The 59-year-old ex-environment minister had been charged with accepting a €3.7 million bribe in exchange for the Fier incinerator contract. He was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison on charges of corruption, abuse of power, and money laundering, all related to the bribery case. Additionally, he has been barred from holding public office for five years.

In parallel, the court also handed down prison sentences ranging from two to eight years to seven additional officials and four businessmen, all facing similar charges.
