On August 22, 2023, Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former Nigerian Petroleum Minister and President of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), was charged with bribery offenses following an investigation by the UK’s National Crime Agency.

Alison-Madueke, who currently resides in London, is alleged to have received benefits totaling at least US$0.12 million, including cash, chauffeur-driven cars, flights on private jets, luxury holidays for her family, and the use of multiple London properties. Additional benefits detailed in the charges encompass furniture, property renovation, staff salaries, private school fees, and luxury gifts. Her assets in the UK have been frozen as part of the NCA’s investigation.
