On 2 April 2025, S. M. Ranjith Samarakoon, former Chief Minister of the North Central Province, was convicted and sentenced to 16 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined LKR 200,000. He was found guilty of corruption under Section 70 of the Bribery Act for misusing government resources by authorizing fuel orders for non-official purposes during his tenure. An additional two-year sentence will be imposed if the fine remains unpaid.
