South African Opposition Leader Found Guilty on Gun Charges

On 1 October 2025, Julius Malema, opposition leader and head of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was convicted of firearm offenses for firing a rifle at a 2018 political rally. The verdict followed viral video evidence of the incident. Malema’s claim that the weapon was a toy was rejected by the court. His bodyguard, who had been implicated in the case, was acquitted — a decision Malema criticized as racially biased. He now faces sentencing in January 2026, with a maximum prison term of 15 years, though the magistrate may exercise leniency.
