Russia’s Former Deputy Defense Minister Sentenced for Corruption

On 1 July 2025, Timur Ivanov, Russia’s former deputy defense minister, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for embezzling approximately $50 million and laundering the funds while overseeing military construction, housing, and support projects. Arrested in April 2024, Ivanov—known for his lavish lifestyle amid wartime shortages—had his assets, including real estate and a collection of vintage cars, confiscated. His prosecution is part of a sweeping anti-corruption crackdown that has exposed widespread graft within Russia’s defense sector, widely blamed for mismanagement during the war in Ukraine. Ivanov denies any wrongdoing and intends to appeal the verdict.
