Peru’s Ex President Sentenced for Money Laundering

On April 15, 2025, Peru’s former president Ollanta Humala was sentenced to 15 years in prison for money laundering. The court found that he and his wife, Nadine Heredia, had accepted $3 million from the Brazilian firm Odebrecht and $200,000 from Venezuela’s then-president, Hugo Chávez, to fund his 2006 and 2011 presidential campaigns. While Humala was taken to Barbadillo prison, Heredia avoided arrest by seeking asylum in the Brazilian embassy with her son and has since been granted safe passage to Brazil. Both maintain they are victims of political persecution and plan to appeal the ruling.
