Kazakhstan’s Former Justice Minister Sentenced for Corruption

On July 1, 2025, former Justice Minister Marat Beketayev, who served from 2016 to 2022, was sentenced to nine years in prison and ordered to forfeit his assets following his conviction for fraud, large-scale embezzlement, and unlawful business involvement. He was found to have abused his office by steering government contracts to a company with which he was affiliated, causing substantial financial losses to the state. Beketayev, who was detained in October 2023 while allegedly attempting to flee the country, is closely associated with former president Nursultan Nazarbayev’s inner circle. His sentencing marks another major step in Kazakhstan’s effort to dismantle entrenched corruption linked to the pre-2022 political order.
