Indonesia’s Former Trade Minister Jailed for Corruption

On July 18, 2025, former Indonesian Trade Minister Thomas Trikasih Lembong was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for corruption. He was convicted of granting sugar import permits to private companies despite the country’s surplus production, causing state losses nearing 600 billion rupiah (USD 36.84 million). The court found that Lembong had bypassed official procedures and prioritized commercial interests over the public good. While no personal enrichment was proven, the verdict held him accountable for misconduct in office. Lembong, who later became a government critic and opposition campaign manager, claimed the case was politically motivated.
