On May 20, 2025, Augustin Matata Ponyo, former Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was sentenced to 10 years of forced labour for embezzling $247 million in public funds allocated to the Bukangalonzo agro-industrial project. Matata has denied the charges, claiming they are politically motivated. He is also barred from holding public office for five years following the completion of his sentence.
