On September 5, 2025, Nadiem Makarim, Indonesia’s former education minister and co-founder of Gojek, was detained for 20 days as a suspect in a corruption investigation linked to school laptop procurement. Prosecutors allege that he manipulated regulations to favor Google’s ChromeOS, bypassing fair competition and causing a state loss of US$120 million. While denying any wrongdoing, Nadiem faces charges of corruption and abuse of authority, which could carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if proven. The case has already implicated several other officials and consultants, with one suspect fleeing abroad.
