Equatorial Guinea’s ExAnti-Graft Chief Jailed for Corruption

On 3 July 2025, Baltasar Engonga, former Director General of Equatorial Guinea’s financial crime agency, was sentenced to 18 years in prison: 8 years for embezzlement, 4 years and 5 months for illicit enrichment, and 6 years and 1 day for abuse of power. He was also fined approximately $1.5 million and permanently barred from holding public office.

The charges stem from his time overseeing insurance regulation between 2015 and 2020, during which he embezzled $1.5 million in public funds. His case drew further public outrage after authorities uncovered more than 400 explicit videos—some filmed inside government offices—linking him to a major sex scandal. Engonga denies any wrongdoing and intends to appeal the verdict.
