Colombia’s Former President Convicted for Bribery and Procedural Fraud

On July 28, 2025, former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe was convicted of bribery and procedural fraud. The charges arose from his attempts to manipulate witness testimony and mislead the justice system during an investigation he had initiated against Senator Iván Cepeda. Prosecutors demonstrated that Uribe and his associates pressured and bribed imprisoned paramilitaries to falsely implicate Cepeda — actions that ultimately led to Uribe’s own indictment. This historic ruling marks the first criminal conviction of a former Colombian head of state, setting a legal precedent in a deeply polarized political landscape.
