Brazil’s Former President Sentenced for Plotting Coup

On 11 September 2025, Jair Bolsonaro, former President of Brazil, was convicted of organizing a coup to remain in office after losing the 2022 election. He was found guilty of participating in an armed criminal organization, attempting to abolish democracy by force, orchestrating a coup, and damaging government property and cultural assets. The ruling makes him the first ex-president in Brazil’s history to be convicted of attacking democratic institutions. Bolsonaro’s lawyers called the sentence excessive and plan to appeal, while he remains under house arrest and barred from running for office until 2030.
