South Africa’s Police Minister Suspended Amid Organized Crime Probe

On 14 July 2025, Senzo Mchunu, South Africa’s police minister, was suspended from his duties following allegations linking him to organized crime groups, interference in investigations of political killings, and corruption within law enforcement. The claims include receiving financial support from businessman Vusimuzi Matlala and orchestrating the disbandment of a task force investigating political assassinations connected to high-profile figures and a drug cartel. A judicial commission has been appointed to investigate, with Mchunu pledging cooperation while denying any wrongdoing.
