On April 25, 2025, George Anthony Devolder Santos, former U.S. Congressman, was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and related offenses. Santos had pleaded guilty in August 2024 to orchestrating multiple fraudulent schemes—including falsifying campaign finance reports to gain national party support, stealing donor credit card information, soliciting $50,000 in political contributions under false pretenses for personal use, and fraudulently collecting more than $24,000 in COVID-related unemployment benefits while employed. He also submitted false financial disclosures to the U.S. House of Representatives, vastly overstating his income and assets. Santos was ordered to pay $373,749.97 in restitution and forfeit $205,002.97.
