Mauritania’s Ex-President Sentenced for Corruption and Illicit Self-Enrichment

On May 14, 2025, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, former President of Mauritania, was sentenced to 180 months in prison and fined $3 million for abuse of power, illicit self-enrichment, and laundering public funds. The ruling followed an appeal of his 2023 conviction and marked the conclusion of a high-profile trial that began in November 2024. Investigators found that during his presidency (2008–2019), Aziz amassed over $70 million through a network of shell companies and offshore accounts.
