On March 31, 2025, AUSTRAC introduced the tipping off offence, making it a criminal offence to disclose certain types of protected information. Tipping off can enable criminals to alter or conceal their illegal activities and may compromise ongoing investigations.
For example, an investigation could be prejudiced if the information:
- reaches a person involved in criminal activity
- reaches someone associated with them, or
- is publicly released.
