On May 29, 2025, Peter Kažimír, Governor of the National Bank of Slovakia and a member of the ECB’s Governing Council, was convicted of bribery and fined €200,000. Prosecutors accused him of acting as an intermediary in a bribe to a former tax official during his tenure as finance minister. The ruling came just days before the scheduled end of his term, yet he is expected to remain in office. The case had nearly collapsed due to legal amendments but was revived on the grounds that it involved harm to the EU’s financial interests. Kažimír denied any wrongdoing and was absent from court, instead issuing a pre-recorded statement in which he vowed to appeal the verdict.
