Former Portuguese PM Stands Trial for Corruption and Money Laundering

On 3 July 2025, José Sócrates, Portugal’s former prime minister, appeared in court to face trial on 22 charges, including passive corruption while in office, laundering 34 million euros through others’ bank accounts abroad, tax fraud, and falsifying documents. Sócrates, who served from 2005 to 2011, was first arrested in 2014 in Portugal’s largest-ever corruption probe, Operation Marquês, and spent months in prison and under house arrest. Although some charges were previously dismissed or considered time-barred, prosecutors reinstated the allegations, citing clerical errors and statutory interpretations, and alleging illicit dealings with executives from Banco Espírito Santo and Portugal Telecom. Sócrates maintains his innocence and claims the proceedings are unjustified.
